May 28, 2008 - Chicago Train Derails Injuring at Least 29 People

Chicago Transit Authority trains were stopped on the city’s Green line after an elevated train derailed on Wednesday morning. At least 29 people were transported to area hospitals and others were treated at the scene on the city’s South Side.

A spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department said that none of the injuries were believed to be serious.

The southbound train remained upright after derailing at around 10 a.m. at a junction between two train lines, according to CTA spokeswoman Catherine Hosinski.

Shuttle buses were providing emergency service in the area and it wasn't known if the commuter line would be back in service in time for the afternoon rush hour.

"Everybody was screaming and hollering and you know, and praying for God," said 35-year-old Willie Jackson, who was a passenger in the second car of the train when it derailed. "I was just hoping that train didn't go over the edge. That was the only thing I was really concerned about," Jackson said.

CTA President Ron Huberman said that the cause of the derailment is still unknown, but the investigation was centered on the signal system at the junction.
